LG hasn’t made money on smartphones in several years, but it’s not giving up. The company has announced the LG V60 ThinQ 5G. As the foldable phone craze sweeps the world, LG has opted to stick with a traditional flat design. If you want more screen real estate, the V60 has a new Dual Screen case like other recent LG devices. The V60 looks competent, but that might not be enough.

In past years, LG would launch the V-series in the fall with improved hardware and quirky power-user features like secondary ticker displays and removable batteries. This was LG’s answer to the annual Galaxy Note refresh. The springtime G-series was more a direct competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy S. While this is called the V60, it could just as easily be a “G9.” It’s your standard glass and metal sandwich with slim bezels and the latest Snapdragon chip.

The V60 is very similar to the Galaxy S20 on the inside. You get the Snapdragon 865 with accompanying 5G modem, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 5,000mAh battery. One thing you don’t get on the S20 is the headphone jack — LG is one of the few premium phone makers still including one.

This device also shares the S20 Ultra’s distinction as a “very large phone.” The V60 has a 6.8-inch OLED display with a small notch at the top for the front-facing camera. The resolution is only 1080p, but that should help with battery life. Around back, LG only has two real cameras: a 64MP regular shooter and a 13MP ultra-wide. It can, however, record 8K video like the S20.

The big four (soon to be three) carriers in the US will all offer the V60. Verizon’s version will feature millimeter-wave 5G, but the others will all stick with the slower but more widely available sub-6 frequencies.

This phone also has a dual-screen case, but we don’t know if all carriers will bundle it with the V60 like the G8x dual-screen accessory (LG has alluded to that being the case). The case has a second screen identical to the one on your phone. That allows you to have two apps open at the same time, or expand the keyboard to fill all of one display while you have an app open on the other. There’s also a small exterior display to show the time and notifications. The main drawback is that the case makes the phone extremely bulky — even more so than one of those folding phones.

The V60 ThinQ 5G will launch this spring. We expect carriers to announce pricing as we near release. Hopefully, LG can undercut Samsung — that shouldn’t be hard considering the exorbitant Galaxy S20 pricing.
