NEWS TECHNOLOGIE

The best thing about ExtremeTech has always been you, our loyal readers–the ones that show up in the comments and keep the discussion going. We take pride in having one of the best comment sections on the Web. We always learn a lot from all of you.

On Thursday, March 11, 2021, we’ll be upgrading our comments section to a new system called OpenWeb, the same one other Ziff Davis sites have been adopting one by one across the board. OpenWeb has better AI-driven spam filtering and moderation tools. This new system also supports images, GIFs, and stylized text. As before, you’ll be able to like or dislike existing comments, reply in threads, and sort the comments by quality.

The one thing we want to call attention to is that when this changeover happens, you will need to create a new login. The good news is you can directly import your existing login. All it takes is a button press where it says Import From Disqus. You’ll see it at the top of the comments section, which will still appear at the bottom of each article page.

You can also find here a short OpenWeb 101: Getting Started Guide (PDF) if you’re curious and want to learn more about the system, or how to set up an account for the first time if you don’t have an existing one with our site.

The rest of ExtremeTech is not changing. Rest assured, we’ll continue to bring you the latest in emerging science and technology trends, and cutting-edge hardware, software, and gadgets. Our de facto Lead Comment Overlord is Joel Hruska, so he’ll be in there, and the rest of us will pop in when we can as well. As always, we want to make this site as good as can be. Let us know what you think of the new system, and also let us know if you run into any issues with it. We look forward to seeing you there.
