Apple fans have awaited today’s announcement since the last one in June, eager for a peek at the iPhone 13, the redesigned iPad Mini, and the new entry-level AirPods. But a product that’s been top of mind for Apple devotees this year—and may arrive via an announcement of its own—is the M1X MacBook Pro, which was accidentally teased at the company’s WWDC event this summer. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, the new MacBooks should hit shelves within the next several weeks.

The M1X MacBook Pro is expected to contain an Apple M1-class CPU, which has found itself a part of MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, 24-inch iMac, Mac Mini, and iPads, but has yet to reach the larger MacBook Pros. More importantly, it may be the first unit to contain the M1X chip, which may also be included in the next Mac Mini. Gurman has previously predicted the M1X CPU will contain two energy-efficient cores and eight high-performance ones, and it will appear in two configurations with either 16 or 32 GPU cores. This is two more CPU cores than the existing M1 contains, and anywhere from two to four times as many graphics cores, as the M1 only contains seven or eight.

Other likely updates include a new 14-inch option, as well as the return of the beloved HDMI port and SD card slot. Rumor has it that the new MacBook Pros won’t feature the controversial Touch Bar, but the new display might be powered by mini LEDs, which would boost the computer’s ability to support brighter HDR. Gurman seems confident the new units will allow MagSafe magnetic charging, which Apple slowly discontinued beginning in 2016. Some believe the body of the MacBook Pros will adopt Apple’s latest flat-edged style, though this hasn’t been confirmed.

It’s unlikely that the M1X MacBook Pro will make an appearance at today’s event (click to watch live on PCMag), but it’s always possible. Gurman and other enthusiasts suspect Apple will formally announce the new MacBook Pro at a later date during its own special event.
