New research into the priceless papyri library recovered from Herculaneum has revealed that some scrolls were written with metal-based ink rather than the traditional carbon inks used in antiquity. This discovery both rewrites the ancient history of writing and could help scientists recover the writings preserved on the fragile scrolls.
